AVID Tour at University of Washington The CKMS AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) program is committed to helping students prepare for college and careers. Our seventh and eighth grade AVID students enjoyed an up-close and personal college readiness experience during a sunny campus tour of the University of Washington last week. More Photos Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for our new Garden Many leadership students have worked on our garden this year. We officially opened it up with an Earth Day ribbon-cutting ceremony. This year, students have moved almost 20 cubic yards of mulch, planted flowers and plants, and dug out many weeds. They have brought a renewal of life to this garden area. It will be open to classes for reading assignments and group discussions. It will be used for Hawk Hours and lunchtime Coffee Houses (more information to come on Coffee Houses). It’s a quiet outdoor sanctuary that we are lucky to have. Thank you to all the students who worked tirelessly to create this sacred space for our CKMS community this year. More Photos School Lunch Hero Day School Lunch Hero Day is a wonderful opportunity to express gratitude to the unsung heroes who work tirelessly in school cafeterias. Thank you, Mr. Alastair, Ms. Julie, Ms. Wendy, and Ms. Huyen, for all you do to ensure that our Hawks have nutritious food daily. Happy Lunch Hero Day! S is for Spirit The ASB and Leadership group, led by the amazing Ms. Rainwater, put on an amazing spirit assembly last week! The Winter Sports coaches spoke, there was a hula hoop challenge, a PVC stick challenge, a plunger challenge, and the coveted basketball shootout between each grade and staff. The staff took the W again! The spirit stick had been with the Seventh-Grade class but now has been passed to the Eighth Grade Class. Everyone had a fabulous time at the spirit assembly! More Photos Tech Free Lunch As part of our commitment to fostering meaningful connections, our sixth-grade class was a part of a tech-free lunchroom experiment last week. By tech-free, we mean no cell phones, school computers or other gaming devices. We also allowed students the opportunity to go outside and play. You could tell the students did actually like the experiment. Their body language was different during lunch. They were leaning forward and engaging with others. The volume was also louder but that was pleasantly expected....
